Environmental Justice with Air & Noise Modeling

Protecting Vulnerable Communities from Pollution

In the ever-evolving landscape of environmental concerns, air and noise pollution continue to pose significant challenges. Not only do these pollutants have the potential to harm the health of individuals, but they also highlight the need for environmental justice within industry. As a leading comprehensive EHS firm, Mostardi Platt recognizes the intricate web of issues surrounding pollution and is committed to addressing them head-on.

The Impact

Air pollution, with its mix of harmful compounds, can pose significant health risks to communities worldwide if they are not addressed through regulatory initiatives. Respiratory illnesses and cancer are just a few of the health problems linked to air pollution. Additionally, noise pollution disrupts the daily lives of millions, often leading to hearing loss, sleep disturbances, and even cardiovascular issues.

Addressing Environmental Inequities

In response to the urgent need for action, states are spearheading Environmental Justice (EJ) policies to curb the disproportionate impact of pollution on vulnerable populations. These initiatives aim to safeguard the health and environment of marginalized communities by preventing them from bearing the brunt of pollution-related consequences.

Our Method

At Mostardi Platt, our approach to environmental justice involves the utilization of emission and/or noise modeling, powerful planning tools that combine geographic information system (GIS) data, U.S. Census data, and measured or calculated emission levels. We employ advanced tools such as the USEPA AERMOD Modeling System to determine air quality impacts of air pollutant emissions. This helps us demonstrate regulatory compliance and make informed decisions about stack heights, emission control options, pollution prevention, and process modifications to reduce the potential impacts on local air quality.

Noise impacts from facilities can also be measured and modeled to demonstrate compliance with state and local noise standards. Where necessary, mitigation measures such as sound enclosures and barrier walls can be quantified so clients can make the appropriate cost-effective solutions.

The Benefits

By anticipating the environmental impacts of industrial activity on the local population, both government and private industry can make informed decisions to avoid adverse effects. Emissions and noise modeling can help to:

  • Identify areas where pollution levels and noise impacts are highest
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of control measures
  • Develop mitigation plans to reduce environmental impacts
  • Allow the source to demonstrate that their controls adequately protect vulnerable communities from the harmful effects of pollution

Our Commitment

Mostardi Platt is committed to helping our clients achieve their environmental goals while also protecting the health and safety of surrounding communities. We provide practical and cost-effective solutions to help clients obtain government approval for projects in EJ areas.
